CHAPTER ELEVEN

It was late afternoon before Nartalsis returned. He carried two large buck deer dangling from his claws.

He landed awkwardly on his hind legs before settling the offerings with gentle, exaggerated respect in front of Kyralian, who eyed him with amusement and then shook his head.

“Yes, you are wonderful. Yes, you took extreme care not to puncture the body. Yes, you are the most wonderful hunter ever. Is that flattery enough?”

Nartalsis chuffed with pleasure, humor in his eyes, before demandingly pushing his head up alongside Kyralian.

“Yes, I love you too. Don’t you lick me with that tongue. Gods know where it has been. And you bathe in the river before you come in the cave. You have blood all over your chest and claws. Messy eater.” All the while, he eased his hands over the dragon’s face, stroking tender spots and scratching ridges.

Bren watched their interaction with a twinge of longing. He could have had this, could have known such a close bond with his little one.

Nartalsis swung away from Kyralian and nudged Bren, driving him back several steps. One great, golden eye blinked at him, and Bren blinked away a tear or two, reaching out to stroke, to feel the fine texture of facial scales under his fingertips.

He shook off the old, dark thoughts with sudden realization.

Maybe he had lost something precious, but in the here and now, this wonderful dragon seemed to care about him, and maybe, just maybe, that could be enough.
